Botox |
|
Botox is a well-known brand name for a medicinal form of botulinum toxin type A, also known as onabotulinumtoxinA. The toxin is produced by a specific bacterium that causes the food poisoning botulism. When injected in small doses into specific muscles, Botox doesn't poison you but acts as a muscle relaxant with effects that can last for several months. There are two forms of the botulinum toxin medicine, Botox and Botox Cosmetic. Botox is used to treat certain medical problems. Botox Cosmetic is used to improve facial wrinkles. But you may hear both referred to as simply Botox.

Why Botox?
Throughout our lives we've all smiled, laughed, and even frowned quite extensively. Unfortunately, wrinkles form as a result of the actions of muscles.
Examples of this are the worry lines in the forehead, frown lines and crow's feet. The contraction of small muscles under the skin results in grooves being worn into the skin. The more emotion you show, the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be.

How Does Botox Work?
Botox works by preventing facial muscles from causing wrinkles, thereby allowing the skin to relax and assume its non-wrinkled appearance. In our Chicago Center, Botox is most commonly injected into the frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, and crow's feet. In some patients, Botox injection into the neck muscles is performed to provide a more youthful appearance surrounding the face. |
